The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore or Opera del Duomo is a lay/secular institution, founded by the Florentine Republic to oversee the construction of the new cathedral and its bell tower. Since 1436, the year of completion of the dome by Brunelleschi and the consecration of the church, the primary task of the Opera became the preservation of its museum complex. In 1777 to this ensamble were added the Baptistery of San Giovanni and in 1891 the Museum, established to accommodate the works of art which over the centuries had been removed from the monuments of the "Il Grande Museo del Duomo". The Opera, as a "fabbriceria", Cathedral Works - is currently subject to the Concordat Laws of 1929, in accordance with which it is run by a Board of Directors comprising seven members, appointed every three years by the Minister of the Interior. The Board elects the President/Chairman among its members. Since 1998, the Opera was legally recognised as not-for-profit organization, regulated by its own statute, pursuing as part of its institutional aims the protection, promotion and enhancement of its artistic heritage.
